WHO: Patel Conservatory at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts
WHAT: Youth Opera Camp and performance of Falling Skies
WHEN: June 17-21; performance on Friday, June 21, 7 p.m.
WHERE: Jaeb Theater
Straz Center for the Performing Arts
DETAILS: In the Patel Conservatory’s very first opera camp, students ages 10-18 will prepare, practice and premiere a brand-new opera written especially for the camp and learn what it takes to become an opera singer.
Auditions are required and can be set up by calling 813.222.1040 or by contacting musicprogram@strazcenter.org. Students with at least one year of voice training or choral experience are encouraged to audition for both lead and chorus roles.
The camp will culminate in a partially–staged performance with live accompaniment: Falling Skies. In this retelling of the classic folk tale of Chicken Little, the titular character stirs up hysteria among the town by claiming, “The sky is falling!” Among this frenzy, the villainous Foxy hopes to satiate his hunger by preying upon the frightened townspeople. In the end, everyone learns a lesson, but only after a dramatic climax in true operatic fashion.
Regularly priced tickets to Falling Skies are $15 and may be purchased by calling 813.229.STAR (7827) or 800.955.1045 outside Tampa Bay, in person at the Straz Center Ticket Sales Office or online at www.strazcenter.org. Handling fees will apply.
The accredited Patel Conservatory offers summer camps and classes in dance, music and theater for students of all ages and experience levels.
