Tampa, Fla., May 24, 2019 – More than 10 Patient Care Technician students from the Clearwater Campus of Ultimate Medical Academy, a nonprofit healthcare educational institution, on Wednesday, May 22 participated in a mass casualty training exercise at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, Pinellas County’s only trauma center.
The students had casualty makeup applied by UMA staff members, and were given cards that gave them new names, ages, and scenarios describing how they obtained their mock injuries. This involved them portraying injured residents at a nursing facility that was knocked down by tornadoes that had passed through the region.
As part of the drill, the students were assessed by Bayfront personnel and given a prognosis. Some were told that they would survive their injuries, while others were not as fortunate.
“This was a great opportunity for our Patient Care Technician students to see firsthand the need for talented healthcare professionals in emergency situations,” UMA Clearwater Campus Director Dr. Rebecca Sarlo said. “The experience with this mass casualty training exercise helps reinforce our students’ commitment to healthcare careers and UMA appreciates the opportunity to help refine healthcare practices at Bayfront St. Pete – a respected trauma hospital in the Tampa Bay area.”
