On Friday, March 22nd, 2019, the DCI Youth Club of Tampa Bay arranged an informational seminar at New Tampa Regional Library to celebrate World Water Day. World Water Day is an international event day recognized by the United Nations and other nonprofit organizations around the world during which advocates and organizations discuss about the global water crisis and how to effectively achieve universal access to clean drinking water and sanitation sources. Nafisa Uddin, a junior in the IB Programme at C. Leon King High School has volunteered with the organization Distressed Children and Infants International (DCI) since 2013 and recently founded the Tampa Chapter. Distressed Children & Infants International is a U.S.-based non-profit organization that supports initiatives for children in Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Nicaragua. For World Water Day 2019, DCI wanted its youth leaders to talk about the UN’s theme of “Leaving No One Behind” and how everyone can help solve the global water crisis. Nafisa arranged the seminar and presented about the global water crisis, the UN agenda, and her own experience volunteering with DCI. King High School IB junior Quentin Powell was a student advocate who spoke about the effects of climate change on the water shortage and conservation methods at home. Mr. Vijay Nair, Dean at Kaiser University and the Toastmaster District Director, was a keynote speaker at the event and encouraged the audience to take initiative about the water crisis and discussed increasing student involvement in humanitarian issues. When asked for his thoughts about the event, Mr. Nair replied, “I think it’s great that students are raising awareness about this issue and that through DCI, are taking action against it”. DCI Executive Director Dr. Ehsan Hoque sent his personal congratulations to the DCI Youth Club of Tampa for its efforts. The club hopes that after this event, it will be able to create more events in the future and get more students involved.
