Pasco, Hillsborough & Pinellas, Florida – (March 21, 2019) Medical Center of Trinity performed its first electrophysiology study today. The procedure was performed by Raul Jimenez, MD. Dr. Jimenez is board certified in cardiovascular disease and clinical cardiac electrophysiology. He completed a fellowship in clinical cardiac electrophysiology at the University of Miami in Florida. He specializes in clinical cardiac electrophysiology and performs procedures such as electrophysiology studies (EPS).
What are Electrophysiology Studies?
Electrophysiology studies (EPS) are tests that help doctors understand the nature of abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias). Electrophysiology studies test the electrical activity of your heart to find where an arrhythmia (abnormal heartbeat) is coming from. These results can help you and your doctor decide whether you need medicine, a pacemaker, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), cardiac ablation or surgery. The studies take place in a special room called an electrophysiology (EP) lab or catheterization lab while the patient is mildly sedated. During EPS doctors insert a single tube called a catheter into a blood vessel that leads to your heart. A specialized electrode catheter designed for EP studies lets them send electrical signs to your heart and record its electrical activities. This can help find any problems of the flow of electricity in the heart. Simply put, when someone’s heart doesn’t beat normally, doctors use EPS to find out why.
