“Everyday Obvious” by Saumitra Chandratreya Debuts
St. Petersburg, FL (February 5, 2019) – The Warehouse Arts District is excited to announce a special exhibit by acclaimed fiber-installation artist, Saumitra Chandratreya, in the Tully-Levine Gallery at the ArtsXchange for one night only. Accompanied by a live musical performance by Indian santoor, Pandit Nandkishor Muley, the ArtsXchange aims to make this St. Pete ArtWalk a magical and memorable night of world music and world-class art.
Chandratreya is a fiber-installation artist that uses found objects, often deriving images from mainstream media or public sources, to create textiles, abstract prints and woven pieces for his contemporary works of art. With pop culture and social commentary playing an important role in his art, every piece of art by Chandratreya is unique and has experiential elements that have brought him widespread recognition.
In 2018, Chandratreya was awarded one of the Emerging Artist Grants from Creative Pinellas. He was one the finalists who exhibited at the Union League Club of Chicago for Luminarts Cultural Foundation Visual Arts Fellowship Show and was awarded the Shapiro Graduate research fellowship at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Born in India, he considers his birth country his home as well as Chicago, IL, and Largo, FL.
“As an immigrant to the United States, my upbringing gave me the tools to critically think about my social discourse. I believe that textiles are a versatile medium for contemporary art and I like molding them to create objects, sculptural pieces, and installations using materials that aren’t always associated with fine art,” says Chandratreya.
The ArtsXchange is an arts destination year-round and during St. Pete’s Second Saturday’s which are free to the public. Parking is available at the ArtsXchange or take the free downtown trolley to stop #5.
