Tampa’s Newest Professional Theatre, Fluid Expressions, celebrates the
Black Arts Movement with Melanated Masterpiece at Stageworks
Tampa, FL – In honor of Black History Month, Fluid Expressions presents a
celebration of the Black Arts Movement, Melanated Masterpiece.
The artistic wing of the Black Power Movement of the 1960s and 70s, the Black
Arts Movement celebrated the unique contributions of African Americans to the
arts and the civil rights movements as a whole. In Melanated Masterpiece,
directors India Davison and Willie Hannah have gathered present day
descendants of this movement. As Hannah notes “We celebrate our history
every day. Black History Month is just an appetizer. Come vibe with us.”
Celebrate Fluid Expressions Inc.’s first annual Black History month event by
joining the company for an evening filled with poetry, music,
theatre, complimentary food, and vendors from Black-owned businesses.
Featuring local African American artists from the Tampa Bay arts community
such as special guests poet Omar Passley and musician P. Mic, the program
also includes a tribute to the Black Arts Movement as well as a reading of Jeff
Stetson’s play The Meeting. Stetson’s play imagines a encounter between
Malcom X and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in which they explore
their approaches to liberation.
The event will be held at Stageworks Theatre on Sunday, February 17, 2019.
Doors open at 6:30pm and the show begins @7pm. Tickets are $15 and can be
