Family Study Center Works with St. Petersburg Agencies to Provide “Trauma-Informed Care” to Infants and Families
A new initiative among caregivers throughout St. Petersburg will transform the way mental health services are delivered to infants and families by taking into effect the profound and unpredictable effects of trauma. The three-year initiative is being coordinated by the Family Study Center at USFSP and is funded by a $797,000 grant from the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg. READ MORE

New Book Traces the Environmental Transformation of the South due to Civil War & Emancipation
The Civil War and the emancipation of slavery not only led to political, economic and social revolutions, it also fueled drastic changes to the physical landscape of the South.That’s the subject of Dr. Erin Mauldin’s book “Unredeemed Land: An Environmental History of Civil War and Emancipation in the Cotton South.”
The book, recently published by Oxford University Press, traces the environmental changes stemming from the rural South’s transition from a pre-Civil War plantation economy to a more intensively capitalistic farming during the late nineteenth century. READ MORE

Students Fight Food Insecurity by Proposing Food Pantry for USFSP Campus
A student-driven initiative to establish a food pantry at USF St. Petersburg could help fend off hunger for students living with food insecurity on and off campus. Lead by undergraduates in Ingrid Brendenberg’s Leading Diverse Teams class, the proposal could see USFSP adopt a food pantry similar to Feed-A-Bull, the USF Tampa food pantry that has distributed more than 24,000 pounds of food to students in need. COMBATING CLIMATE CHANGE
Chemistry Professor to Gain New Insight on Climate Change by Studying the Ocean’s Spray
A chemistry professor plans to measure spray from the ocean’s waves in an attempt to unlock the secrets to fighting global climate change.Yasin Elshorbany, an Assistant Chemistry Professor and a former NASA scientist, was recently awarded part of a $800,000 grant from the National Science Foundation that will be used to collect and analyze aerosol particles from breaking waves at the Tudor Hill Marine Atmospheric Observatory in Bermuda. PRESTIGIOUS RANGEL FELLOW
USFSP Alumna Selected as Rangel Fellow, Second in System History
Alumna Monica Edwards has been recognized by the Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Program as a 2019 Rangel Fellow. Edwards is the second Rangel Fellow in the University of South Florida history.
Fellows receive $37,500 annually for a two-year graduate degree in a field of their choice related to the Foreign Service, paid summer internships with a member of Congress in Washington, D.C. and at embassies abroad and mentoring from senior Foreign Service Officers.
