Family Can Play a Key Role in How Well Students Perform at School

November 29, 2018 by Post

Parents and teachers often ask the same questions: “Why does my child (pupil) get poor grades? What is the reason for low academic performance?” There is still no definitive answer to this question. Some adults think that with the arrival of the child to the school, the role of the family in his upbringing diminishes, because the most of the time is spent at the educational institution. But in reality, the influence of the family only increases.

It is not right to reduce the spiritual world of a little human to learning. If parents strive to ensure that all the energy of the child is directed to the lessons, his life will become unbearable. He should be not only a schoolchild but, above all, a person with many-sided interests. Without parents, a school cannot make the world of every pupil as diverse as possible.

Factors affecting academic performance

The progress in education is associated with good behavior and, of course, high grades in all subjects. In order to achieve such a result, it is only necessary to study well. But not all students have exemplary achievements at school. What is the reason? There are many factors that directly affect the academic performance.

First of all, productivity of training depends on upbringing and parents. Mom and dad can stimulate a child’s desire to learn well. It’s bad when parents force a student to do what he does not like, want to use him to realize their own dreams. It is necessary to be an example of a successful person who has achieved a lot in life, so that the child would like to follow his parent.

The second aspect which influences the academic performance is the financial position of the family. Money does not solve everything. But it is a powerful lever. The lack of money can cause certain complexes, while surpluses can spoil the character. In both cases, education may suffer. It is better to find the golden mean and to live in peace in the middle of material prosperity. Material security will allow the child to visit different developing courses, buy books, etc.

Family is the cradle of a person’s spiritual birth

The variety of relations between relatives, the nakedness of feelings, the abundance of various forms of their manifestation, the living reaction to the smallest details of the child’s behavior – all this creates a favorable environment for the emotional and moral formation of the personality.

The family is a special kind of collective playing a major, long-term and most important role in the upbringing. As psychologists found out, trust and fear, confidence and shyness, calmness and anxiety, cordiality and warmth – all these qualities acquire the personality in the family. They are manifested and fixed in the child’s consciousness long before entering the school and have a lasting influence on his development. Relations between relatives, which form all human relations, are the most profound and lasting.

A happy family has morally valuable ties between adults and children. It is organized in such a way that all members can help each other, show multifarious care. For the child, a family is the first and the main link that connects his life with the social environment. And it is a very important aspect. The modern family cannot exist beyond the connections with the surrounding people, in its inner, solitary world.

In every family that wants to raise the children as best as possible, there are some common features, conditions that are extremely important for the moral and labor education of schoolchildren.

Firstly, it is the emotional, intimate nature of family upbringing, based on kinship feelings, the deep blood love of adults to children and vice versa. The child feels that caring, caressing warmth, joy and pleasure come from mom and dad, grandparents. If there is no father in the family, the mother, as a rule, provides the double care. Usually, there are other loving relatives, people close to family.

It’s not for nothing that, because of love, adults and children forgive each other such things that they would not forgive in case with the strangers. However, if love on the part of the adults becomes sacrificial, it turns out to be one-sided (everything for the child and nothing from him) or very inconsistent (today, parents are immensely indulged, and tomorrow, they demand unbearable things). As a result, children have selfish tendencies in behavior.

In other cases, when kids lack love, sooner or later, it will dramatically affect their spiritual and neuropsychic development.

Study of the correlation between the family atmosphere and the academic performance

Scientists have conducted research based on a questionnaire. 121 schoolchildren were interviewed. Two groups were formed: kids who succeeded in their studies (“A” and “B” marks) and those who lagged (“C” and “D”).

The research material was analyzed according to the following criteria:

  • progress of the child at school;
  • features of family relationships;
  • dominant type of parental behavior.

As a result, it was revealed that the following factors have the most powerful impact on the performance of children: the domestic atmosphere, the frequency of intra-family conflicts and quarrels, family traditions, joint pastime.

Those children who identified the family relationships in the questionnaires as “very good” and “good” were successful at school. But a majority of the respondents who called the relationship in the family “not very friendly” lagged in studies. Such kids often had quarrels and conflicts with their parents. Members of “cold” families are less likely to get together, do not support family traditions, often quarrel in the presence of children.

The “problem” students complained about a miscommunication, a violation of the ethics of relationships (manifestations of rudeness, disrespect, rejection). One of the reasons for quarrels is a refusal of parents to participate in family affairs.

So, the psychological climate that relatives create is of vital importance for the student. The peculiarities of constructing the child’s relationships with significant adults, namely with parents, is the leading factor in the progress at school.

If moms and dads want to see good grades, they should not demand ready results but, at least, offer a help with homework. Even if you do not have time for this, find professional writing services for the child and create a favorable emotional background at home.
