| SARASOTA, Fla. (Nov. 26, 2018) – Computer gaming is a multi-billion dollar industry with scores of opportunities for creative and technical thinkers. On Saturday, Dec. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon, USF Sarasota-Manatee will host a youth workshop, “The Business of Computer Gaming,” aimed at aspiring game designers.
The three-hour event is free and open to the public. It will be held at USFSM’s campus, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. The Florida Center for Partnerships for Arts Integrated Teaching (PAInT), a statewide center based at USFSM, is presenting the workshop in partnership with the State College of Florida and FUNducation, an organization that encourages children to engage in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM). “PAInT is delighted to organize this community workshop with SCF,” said Dr. Denise Davis-Cotton, coordinator of PAInT. “Creating interdisciplinary connections helps prepare students to acquire high-demand skills for a future in the global workforce.” Speakers Dr. Giti Javidi, an associate professor of information technology at USFSM, and Neirda Lafontant, the founder of FUNducation, will lead youth in designing computer games that support environmental technologies and make global connections. Dr. Javidi has worked to develop new curricula and programs for computer science education with the goal of engaging a wider audience and bridging the gender gap in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. FUNducation’s mission is to launch, develop and sustain STEAM programs that inspire children to go beyond conventional solutions and become innovative thinkers in STEAM fields. The Andrew Mellon Foundation and New College of Florida are sponsoring the event.
Dr. Cobanoglu honored with global achievement medal, certificate Kudos to Dr. Cihan Cobanoglu for receiving a Global Achievement Certificate and Medal in recognition of his selection as a Fulbright Specialist and upcoming trip to Turkey to conduct training. Dr. Cobanoglu was honored by USF System President Judy Genshaft in a recent ceremony that recognized faculty contributions in global outreach and study abroad. Dr. Edie Banner was also honored. Dr. Cobanoglu is the McKibbon endowed chair and director of the M3 Center at USFSM’s College of Hospitality & Tourism Leadership (CHTL). He’s also president of the Association of North America Higher Education International, an organization that promotes global outreach within hospitality education. Recently named a Fulbright Specialist, Dr. Cobanoglu will travel to Canakkale University in Turkey next month to conduct training sessions with faculty and graduate students on the use of technology in hospitality education. Included will be a workshop aimed at academicians concerning the use of SmartPLS, a type of statistical software used frequently in social sciences. The workshop will be conducted with input by Dr. Faizan Ali, an assistant professor in the CHTL. “I was very honored to receive this certificate and medal,” Dr. Cobanoglu said. “I consider myself a global citizen. The research and the conferences and workshops I organize and attend, they’re all global, and to represent my university as a Fulbright Specialist is an additional honor. Obviously, Dr. Genshaft’s Global Achievement Medal has encouraged me to engage even more in global activities.” USFSM professors organizing student trip to France, Italy USF Sarasota-Manatee’s Dr. Joe Askren and Dr. Ken Caswell are inviting students on a four-week tour of Italy and France during summer 2019. The USFSM History & Culture of Food & Beverage program runs from May 26 to June 21 and takes students on tours of vineyards, local farms and markets. Students will engage in chef-designed cooking classes and collaborative discussion with chefs, food scientists and hospitality experts. The program is open to students of any major, 18 years of age or older, with an interest in Italian and French culture and language. Tuition is for six credit hours. The $5,376.34 cost includes accommodations, a daily continental breakfast, 11 lunches, eight dinners and five tastings. It includes excursions to farms, wineries, a cheese house, and brewery and cooking demonstrations, as well as emergency medical and evacuation insurance. Students will be responsible for their own air fare, personal expenses and tuition costs.
