The St. Petersburg Arts Alliance and its committee, Arts for a Complete Education (ACE) Celebrate our talented students!

November 15, 2018 by Post

As advocates for arts programs in our Pinellas County schools, ACE believes that arts opportunities contribute to a well-rounded education for all students.  Arts eduction promotes creative thinking, problem solving, self-discipline, confidence and demonstrably higher school test scores and high graduation rates (Pinellas County is 82.9%).  We are happy to report that arts programs are alive and well in Pinellas County Schools.

RECENT SUCCESSES INCLUDE:

  • Tarpon Springs Outdoor Performance Ensemble placed fifth in the nation(out of 108) in Bands of America championships in Washington DC on November 10. The ensemble has received numerous awards over the years, including 2014 Grand National Champion and 2017 Atlanta Super Regional Champion.
  • Art students at Pinellas County Center for the Arts at Gibbs High School were honored at Carnegie Hall on June 7.   Christopher Velez was one of only 8 nationally awarded a Gold Medal for his art portfolio and a $1000 scholarship.  The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards are the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in grades 7-12.
  • Lakewood High School Jazz Ensemble was invited to participate in the 2018 New York City Jazz Festival, where the band performed at the Apollo Theatre.  The band previously won the Crescent City Musical Festival in New Orleans and have produced their first CD.  The Jazz Ensemble performs frequently in Pinellas County also.

ACE believes every child in every school should receive a well-rounded education that includes a comprehensive, sequential, high-quality program of fine arts instruction, taught by certified arts teachers.  Pinellas County public schools provide that opportunity.

We invite you to experience the very talented students in our community first hand.  Take a look at the list of concerts, performances and exhibits coming up.  We hope to see you there.
