USF Sarasota-Manatee to host ‘Puerto Rico: A Year after Maria’

November 9, 2018 by Post

SARASOTA, Fla. (Nov. 09, 2018) – A year after Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico continues to cope with the storm’s aftermath. Most basic services are restored, and many of the blue tarps that covered homes and businesses have come down, but more work is needed.

Learn how Puerto Rico is continuing its recovery a year after Maria during a special panel discussion at USF Sarasota-Manatee on Thursday, Nov. 15, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The discussion, “Puerto Rico: A Year after Maria,” will be held in the campus’ Selby Auditorium, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. The event is free and open to the public.

“Attendees will hear facts and testimonies from individuals who took part in the relief effort and their thoughts about Puerto Rico’s outlook as the island continues to recover from the hurricane’s impact,” said Dr. Carlos E. Jiménez-Angueira, a USFSM accounting professor who will participate in the discussion and serve as moderator.

Other panelists include retired Air Force Col. Evelio “EJ” Otero, Jr., and Deidre Orriola, an instructor at USF’s College of Public Health. For more about the panelists, visit sar.usfsm.edu/event/puerto-rico-a-year-after-maria/.

The discussion coincides with International Education Week at USFSM. The annual celebration allows students and faculty to explore cultures while learning about upcoming study-abroad initiatives.

“Our goal is to promote global culture at USFSM and to support our faculty and students in furthering their international education and collaboration,” said Amela Malkic, director of Global Engagement at USFSM. “Study abroad in particular gives our students once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to see the world while learning, experiencing new cultures and expanding their professional and personal networks.”

The week kicks off Tuesday, Nov. 13, at noon with the second annual World Showcase. Students, faculty and staff can learn about world cultures as presenters set up tables with interactive displays inside the campus’ FCCI Rotunda. Learn more at sar.usfsm.edu/event/world-showcase/.

Also Nov. 13, faculty can learn how to propose a study-abroad program by contacting Malkic at amela@usf.edu. Later, an info session about next summer’s study-abroad trip to Merida, Mexico, is scheduled in room B240. Students can drop by from 4 to 5 p.m.

International Week continues Nov. 14 at 11 a.m. with the Study Abroad Fair. Co-sponsored by USF World, this two-hour event at the FCCI Rotunda will showcase USFSM’s faculty-led, study-abroad programs and Peace Corps opportunities.

Then, from 2 to 3 p.m. in room B242, students can learn about international and Foreign Service careers at a session led by USAID Development Diplomat-in-Residence Carlye Cammisa.

Later, a presentation about an upcoming study-abroad trip to France and Italy will be held in Room B240 from 4 to 5 p.m. USFSM’s Dr. Joe Askren and Dr. Ken Caswell will lead the month-long trip next summer.

Finally, on Thursday, Nov. 15, students can learn about funding opportunities and important deadlines related to study-abroad trips during a discussion from noon to 1 p.m. in room B335.

International Week is organized by the USFSM Global Engagement Office. The panel discussion is organized by the USFSM Global Studies Committee and co-sponsored by the USF Status of Latinos Committee.
