Transgender Teen Featured in Documentary Film

October 16, 2018 by Post

GULFPORT, FLORIDA: The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library is proud to continue its monthly LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, November 8 with a a documentary following the life of a transgender teen and his family. The Film Series is a free gathering to watch a film in the company of friends and neighbors on the second Thursday of each month.  Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South).  Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Licensing restrictions prohibit explicitly naming of film titles in general press releases.  But feel free to call the Library at (727) 893-1074 for the film title and other information about the film series.  Or find titles and more information online: www.mygulfport.us/lgbtq-resources.

About the November 8 film: Filmed over the course of four years, this documentary is an intimate story about a family in transition, following the journey of trans teen Bennett as he navigates adolescence, sobriety and the physical and emotional ramifications of his changing gender identity.  Through the process, his mother Suzy makes her own transformation – toward accepting that the daughter she raised as Rachel is now her son Bennett.  “Engaging throughout… full of heart.” (Eye for Film) (Not Rated)

Save the date, Thursday December 13, for the next film in the series.  Rachel Weisz stars as a successful New York photographer who, hearing of the death of her father, returns to the London Jewish Orthodox community of her upbringing after having been shunned years earlier for her attraction to a childhood female friend.  Navigating a range of emotions in her old homeplace, as well as a range of attitudes from hostile to welcoming among family and former friends, the attraction to her old friend, now married, is rekindled.  Also starring Rachel McAdams.  (Rated R; Adults only suggested)

Watch for announcements of other films as they are added to the series on the second Thursday of each month.
