Florida Orthopaedic Institute (FOI) is proud to announce its Athlete of the Week award winners for the week ending October 5, 2018. This week’s winner of the Team Player Award is senior volleyball player from Walter J. Sickles High School Adrienne Villanueva. The Leadership Award goes to senior football safety defensive back Lucas Collins, also from Walter J. Sickles High School.
Adrienne Villanueva was nominated by her Head Volleyball Coach Gary Jones. Jones had high praises for the young athlete, “Adrienne is the epitome of a leader on and off the court. In the classroom, she carries a weighted GPA and is greatly involved in collaborating with classmates to ensure success. On the court, she is a leader not only by her stats but also as a floor general. Outside of school, she volunteers her time at Moffitt Cancer Center. She is an amazing student-athlete that is an example of balance and service”.
Lucas Collins was recognized by his Football Head Coach Patrick Murphy. “Lucas has a strong work ethic. He is a leader on and off the field and is always willing to sacrifice himself for better of the team. He is humble and disciplined in all aspects of life”.
For these young athletes, winning the FOI Athlete of the Week Award is the first of many goals they are looking to achieve this year and after high school. Both students are among the top of their class and their character promises a great future.
“My main goal is to play Division 1 Football. When in college, I plan on studying to become a nurse practitioner,” said Collins.
“If I would give advice to anyone it would be to really be involved with what you love to do. As stressful as it is trying to deal with my life, there’s not one day that I regret ever getting involved in everything I am right now. Although it gets hard at times, at the end of the day it’s all worth it. Getting to do something you love every day is such an amazing feeling and experience you can look back at for the rest of your life,” Villanueva stated.
The FOI Athlete of the Week – Team Player Award is given each week to a Hillsborough County high school athlete whose coaches feel does his or her best to put direction into action, make a significant contribution to the team, and continuously works to improve his or her skills, attitude and training.
Athletes who earn the FOI Athlete of the Week – Leadership Award must exemplify strong relationship building skills, show excellent initiative on and off the court, and serve as a role model for his or her peers.
