Watson Clinic Surgeon Hosting Presentation on Robotic Surgical Technologies During Upcoming 2018 Polk Scholastic Chess Tournament

October 1, 2018 by Post

Lakeland, FL – Watson Clinic board-certified general surgeon Anthony R. Zappia, MD will take part in this year’s Polk Scholastic Chess Tournament, a popular annual event that brings together over 500 children from grades K – 12 throughout our community for a fun, competitive and educational experience. Dr. Zappia will host a presentation on robotic surgery for each of the participants and hundreds of additional attendees, and will provide them with an up-close look at the daVinci® surgical robotic system.

Dr. Zappia’s presentation will take place on the opening day of the tournament at 8:45 am on Saturday, October 13 from the Bartow Civic Center, which is located at 2250 S. Floral Ave in Bartow.

“These extraordinary children have shown tremendous dedication and focus to make it to this tournament,” says Dr. Zappia. “This marks an occasion where we as a community can support and inspire their continued interest in future careers, goal development, and innovative problem solving. Robotic surgery is a fascinating field of medicine that will incite and promote these values.”

Dr. Zappia’s areas of expertise include robotic surgery for a variety of minimally invasive procedures including hernia repair, gall bladder removal, colon and stomach surgery. Utilizing this technology, patients benefit from smaller incisions, less surgical trauma and significantly faster recoveries when compared to traditional surgical methods.

Dr. Zappia received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, IN.  He completed his General Surgery residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI. He is board-certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery.  He is a member of the American College of Surgeons.
