“Summer of Love” inspired custom fashion designs by local artist George Stovall

August 27, 2018 [St. Petersburg, FL] — The Florida Holocaust Museum presents a special rock & roll fashion program “Summer of Love Experience: Art, Fashion, and Rock & Roll” on Thursday, September 13th at the Museum. This program includes a display of custom rock & roll fashion designs by local artist George Stovall.
“My art has been influenced by Salvadore Dali’s work, especially his fascination with eggs and skulls and using disparate objects in such unusual ways to achieve thought provoking works. I also feel a kinship to the famous clothing designer and artist of the early to mid 20th century, Elsa Schiaparelli. I feel the same way she did in how clothing art ought to be used and displayed,” said Stovall.
Stovall fled to Berkeley, California in the late 1960’s from Wall Street. He was an attendee at Bill Graham’s Fillmore West during the “Summer of Love” and on until 1973. He had a part in the Altamont Speedway Free Festival that ended the “Summer of Love” in 1969.
This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Bill Graham and the Rock & Roll Revolution, which explores the extraordinary life of renowned music promoter Bill Graham (1931- 1991) who helped launch and promote the careers of countless rock & roll artists such as Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, Fleetwood Mac, the Who, Led Zeppelin, the Doors, and the Rolling Stones. Bill Graham and the Rock & Roll Revolution also traces the indomitable spirit of a man brought to the United States as an eleven-year-old Jewish refugee fleeing the Nazis, fueling a lifelong passion and advocacy for justice. “Summer of Love Experience: Art, Fashion, and Rock & Roll” will take place on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. at The Florida Holocaust Museum. This program is free and open to the public. To reserve your seat, please call 727.820.0100 ext. 301.
