Habitat Pinellas Kicks Off Playhouse Program with Great Explorations Children’s Museum

August 23, 2018 by Post

St. Petersburg, FL— Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas County will kick off the Playhouse Program this fall with community partner, Great Explorations Children’s Museum. The inaugural build will be held at Great Exploration’s location in St. Petersburg on Friday, September 7th, 2018. The build will benefit the Pearson’s, a local St. Petersburg family who became Habitat Pinellas homeowners in 2016.

The Playhouse Program provides local children with a playful retreat to call their own while supporting affordable housing in Pinellas County. At Habitat for Humanity Playhouse build days, corporate teams assemble and decorate children’s playhouses, which are then donated to families served by the Habitat program. Flexible scheduling and location options make Playhouse Builds easy for teams and events of any size.

Great Explorations Children’s Museum is a natural fit for the Playhouse Program, and the partnership was formed from two Leadership St. Pete® Class of 2018 graduates. Great Exploration Children’s Museum has partnered with Habitat Pinellas to provide each family with a full year membership. This membership will include unlimited admission for a family of 5, monthly deals, discounts and more.

About Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas County
Since 1985, Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas County has constructed 486 homes for struggling families in Pinellas County, using locally raised funds. Volunteers and the future homeowners construct the homes, which are sold at no profit and financed with a zero-interest loan. Habitat Pinellas homeowner candidates earn 30 to 80 percent of area median income. For Pinellas County, that translates to as little as $27,000 a year for a family of four. Candidates must also demonstrate need for adequate shelter; ability to pay back a zero-interest loan and willingness to partner with Habitat Pinellas to invest 350 to 450 sweat equity hours. Mortgage monies are used to build even more homes, making each donation to Habitat a perpetual legacy to the community. Habitat believes that home ownership contributes to family stability, leading, in turn, to community stability. Additionally, Habitat Pinellas raises funds through their ReStore, a home improvement outlet where donated household and building items are sold to the public.
