For the eighth year running, athletes at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) above 3.0, when athletes during the 2017-18 school year achieved a 3.14 GPA.
The academic achievements of SCF’s student-athletes led to four teams being named to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Honorable Mention Academic Team of the Year. The four teams were:
• Softball, with a 3.31 GPA.
• Tennis, with a 3.55 GPA.
• Baseball, with a 3.18 GPA.
• Volleyball, with a 3.17 GPA.
Three SCF students were named to the NJCAA All-Academic First Team for maintaining a 4.0 GPA. They were Eric Kimsey, baseball; Laura Illanes Rodriguez and Sandra Weiss, both tennis players. Two SCF students were named to the NJCAA All-Academic Second Team for maintaining a 3.80 GPA or higher. They were Brooke Sharpe, a softball player and Eliska Truneckova, a volleyball player. Ten SCF students were named to the NJCAA All-Academic Third Team for maintaining a 3.60 to 3.79 GPA. They were baseball player Anthony Gonella; three volleyball payers, Alysha O’Dell, Lauren Shivley and Maria Tucuna; and six softball players, Brittney Rodriguez, Lauren Parker, Lauren Stalvey, Madison Yoder, Paige Aldred and Sydney Parks.
Individually, 29 student-athletes finished the year with a 3.30 or higher GPA and earned Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) All-Academic Team honors. Fifty student-athletes from SCF with a 3.00 or higher GPA earned Suncoast Conference All-Academic Team honors.
