GULFPORT, FLORIDA: The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library is proud to continue its monthly LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, September 13 with an Oscar-winning film portraying the trials and triumphs of a transgender Chilean woman. The Film Series is a free gathering to watch a film in the company of friends and neighbors on the second Thursday of each month.
Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28thAvenue South). Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

About the September 13 film: Winner of the 2018 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Marina is a transgender woman in Santiago, Chile whose older boyfriend Orlando becomes ill and unexpectedly dies. In the face of her grief, Marina must cope with hostility and unacceptance from Orlando’s family and their attempts to shut her out of Orlando’s funeral and force her out of the home she shared with him. She battles the very same forces that she has spent a lifetime fighting just to become the woman she is now – a complex, strong, forthright and fantastic woman. (Rated R)
Save the date, Thursday October 18*, for the next film in the series. This 2017 documentary examines the life and work of Armistead Maupin, one of the world’s most beloved storytellers, following his evolution from a conservative son of the Old South into a gay rights pioneer whose novels have inspired millions to claim their own truth. The story of the “Tales of the City” author moves between playful and poignant and laugh-out-loud funny. With help from friends including well-known actors, Maupin offers a disarmingly frank look at the journey that took him from the jungles of Vietnam to the bathhouses of 70’s San Francisco to the front line of the American culture war.
