PHSC Announces New Civic Literacy Requirement

July 31, 2018 by Post

Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) recently announced it will implement the new Civic Literacy requirement for Associate in Arts and bachelor’s degree seeking students.  First-time-in-college (FTIC) students, entering the Florida College System in 2018-2019, and thereafter, must satisfy the Civic Literacy requirement prior to submitting an Intent to Graduate form in the term they plan to graduate. The new Civic Literacy requirement, Florida Rule 6A-10.04213, was passed by the Florida Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Rick Scott in 2017.

The Civic Literacy requirement can be met by successfully completing one of the following courses or tests:

  • POS 2041, a college-level survey course on American government, or
  • AMH 2020, U.S. American history (II), since 1865, or
  • Successfully pass Advanced Placement (AP) U.S. Government & Politics test, with a passing score of 3; the AP U.S. History test, with a passing score of 4; or the College Level Examination Program – American Government test with a passing score of 50.

The new law says students must demonstrate “…an understanding of the basic principles of American democracy and how they are applied in our republican form of government, an understanding of the United States Constitution, knowledge of the founding documents and how they have shaped the nature and functions of our institutions of self-governance, and an understanding of landmark Supreme Court cases and their impact on law and society.”

As a comprehensive, multicampus learning-centered institution, PHSC utilizes various instructional modalities and support services. PHSC provides an accessible, diverse teaching and learning environment rich with opportunities for students to achieve academic success and cultural growth in a global society.
