Students to learn the concepts of upstander behavior and speaking out against injustice
June 20, 2018 [St. Petersburg, FL] – The Florida Holocaust Museum (The FHM) has partnered with the Tampa Bay History Center to offer its Speak Up, Speak Now!®program to students. This is the first time that The FHM is providing this program in Tampa.
This summer, The FHM will be working with approximately twenty-four summer camp students at the Tampa Bay History Center, ages seven to eleven. These students will have an age-appropriate introduction to the Holocaust, learn and discuss a personal story of a Jewish family affected by persecution during the Holocaust, and work on a hands-on art activity. Amanda Hoffman, Youth Programs Coordinator at the Tampa Bay History Center, recently contacted the Museum about administering the Speak Up, Speak Now!® program as she thought it would be a perfect for her students.
“At the Tampa Bay History Center’s History Adventure Camps, campers have the chance to learn about history in fun, hands-on ways, even if the histories are more difficult to understand. It is important for our campers to learn about tolerance and acceptance because these themes shape not only Tampa’s history, but also world history and our daily lives. While it can be a heavy topic, The FHM has figured out a way to make these lessons understandable and relatable for our young history-lovers,” said Hoffman.
The FHM’s Speak Up, Speak Now!® began as a summer program teaching students about the importance of speaking up in the face of injustice, through the arts and group activities. In this program, students meet with Holocaust Survivors, law enforcement officers, and community activists. This program has recently expanded into the Pinellas, Hillsborough, and Sarasota County school systems and will expose even more students to the concepts of upstander behavior, the rights and responsibilities of living in a democracy, and speaking out against injustice.
