Children’s Book Author to Discuss Harvey Milk, LGBTQ Pride Flag Origins

June 13, 2018 by Post

GULFPORT, FLORIDA: Teacher and children’s book author Rob Sanders will be featured in a pair of programs at the Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South) on Tuesday July 10th in which he will read from his new children’s book, Pride: The Story of Harvey Milk and the Rainbow Flag.  The new book has already been praised by Publishers Weekly as a “poignant and uplifting biography.”  There will be one afternoon program geared to children and their families from 4:00 until 5:00 p.m., as well as an evening program geared to adults from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m.  Both programs are free and open to the public and all ages

The children’s storytelling and craft program will feature Mr. Sanders reading from the book, time for questions and answers from children and parents, as well as a craft session with the children’s librarian where children will be able to design their own flags, reflecting what gives them pride.  Craft materials will be provided free of charge.  Children can also participate in a “mini-march” through the library at the end of the program.  Copies of the book will be available for purchase by parents and can be signed by the author.

During the evening program, Mr. Sanders will again read from the book as well as discuss his experiences as a proud and openly gay public school teacher and author.  Questions from the audience are welcome.  Copies of the book will be available for purchase and will be signed by the author.

Rob Sanders is a Florida public elementary school teacher and the author of several picture books in addition to Pride, including the Crystal Kite Award Winner Outer Space Bedtime Race. He also is this year’s recipient of the Florida Book Awards’ Gwen P. Reichert Gold Medal for Children’s Literature for his book, Rodzilla.

The events are presented by the LGBTQ Resource Center.  The Center is a project of the non-profit Circle of Friends of the Gulfport Public Library.  The Resource Center provides collections, services and events throughout the year to the local LGBTQ community, its friends and family.  Find out more about the Resource Center, the Circle of Friends and the Library on the web at www.mygulfport.us/gpl or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/GulfportLibraryFL.
