Bulls Notebook: Economics conference comes to USFSM

June 4, 2018 by Post

SARASOTA, Fla. (June 04, 2018) – USF Sarasota-Manatee this week will host more than 120 academics, students and professionals from 22 countries as they gather for the GLOBE 2018 business and economics conference.

The conference – the 13th organized by the Association of North America Higher Education International (ANAHEI) – will showcase scholarly work from dozens of authors. Two pre-conference workshops are scheduled today, starting at 1 p.m. with a presentation by USFSM assistant professor Dr. Faizan Ali entitled, “Are Our Methods Sound? Basic Mistakes Made in Hospitality Marketing Research.”

On Tuesday, Dr. Karen Holbrook, regional chancellor of USFSM, will moderate a keynote panel discussion, “The Role of Women in Business and Education.”

Closing out the Thursday session, Keith Barron, an attorney and instructor at USFSM’s College of Hospitality & Tourism Leadership, will present an address, “Sexual Harassment: The Stakes Continue to Rise.”

Several more panel discussions, paper presentations and round-table talks are scheduled throughout the week. Topics will range from business and technology to legal issues. A final workshop is scheduled Friday morning, “Teaching with Technology.”

Some 58 universities will be represented at the conference.

“The GLOBE conference is a truly international event as the attendees have the opportunity to socialize and expand their network at an international level,” said Dr. Cihan Cobanoglu, McKibbon endowed chair, director of the M3 Center at USFSM’s College of Hospitality & Tourism Leadership (CHTL) and president of ANAHEI.

“Furthermore, it welcomes great and interesting researchers from a diverse number of universities. I am thrilled that we could bring this amazing event and talents to USFSM,” he said.

ANAHEI, USFSM and the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau are sponsoring the conference. Dr. Cobanoglu will serve as conference host and program chair while Dr. Moez Limayem, dean of the Muma College of Business at the University of South Florida, will serve as honorary conference chair.

Military organization supports scholarship fund

USF Sarasota-Manatee is offering its thanks to the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) Sarasota chapter for its recent support of student veterans.

MOAA representatives recently visited USFSM to present a $3,000 check to establish a student-veteran scholarship.

“This is just something we wanted to do to help out our local veterans,” Ret. Navy Capt. Brian McCarthy, chairman and president of MOAA’s Sarasota chapter, said in presenting the donation. “We hope this helps with expenses not covered under the students’ military benefits.”

Veteran’s Administration benefits typically pay student veterans’ tuition costs but don’t always cover incidental expenses for books, software and other items necessary for college. MOAA’s assistance, which will be allocated in the form of a scholarship, was intended to offset those costs.

“We want to be very engaged with our local veterans and this is just one of the ways we can help,” McCarthy said.

Student veterans can learn more about the scholarship by visiting the campus’ Military and Veterans Success Center.

USFSM admissions director lauded by UnidosNow

Kudos to Andy Telatovich, USFSM’s director of admissions and financial aid, for being named “Partner of the Year” by UnidosNow.

“This is truly an honor,” said Telatovich, who learned of the award a couple of weeks ago. “It put a big smile on my face.”

UnidosNow, a local nonprofit, has collaborated for years with USF Sarasota-Manatee, often directly with Telatovich. Its mission is to help the Hispanic community through “education, integration and civic engagement.”

Telatovich often attends UnidosNow events and supports its efforts to connect with the campus.

Each year, he helps coordinate classroom space for the group’s “Future Leaders Academy,” a college preparatory program, and participates in information sessions with the students. Also, along with other admissions staff, he works with UnidosNow during USFSM’s “Instant Decision Days,” in which students learn on the spot whether they’ve been accepted to USFSM or need to take additional steps for admission.

Recently, Telatovich partnered with UnidosNow in the creation of its Future Leaders Academy for Girls (FLAG), a program that encourages girls from elementary schools to learn about college. This past spring, the girls conducted research on colleges they “adopted” and displayed their research on posters at the campus’ Selby Auditorium. One poster by two girls focused on USFSM.

Telatovich has also attended UnidosNow Future Leaders Academy graduations and college decision days.

“I’ve always been impressed with the work UnidosNow does and the impact they have on students in the community,” he said.
