Tampa, FL – On Saturday, May 19th, Meals On Wheels of Tampa (MOWTampa) will provide over 800 hurricane preparedness packs to all program recipients in preparation for this year’s hurricane season. The hurricane packs will consist of a battery powered flashlight/radio/siren combo, water, nonperishable food for up to five days, shelter information and an emergency checklist.
Many of MOWTampa’s recipients are homebound and/or elderly. With the simple act of knocking on someone’s door, MOWTampa is providing daily safety checks in addition to a meal. With the hurricane packs, MOWTampa is able to provide a little more safety in the event a storm hits again this year. Hurricane Irma caused a disruption in the meal delivery service for almost a week last year.
MOWTampa is a privately funded non-profit organization that was founded in Tampa in 1975. Hurricane Preparedness Packs are being made possible this year through partnerships with BB&T, Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation, Nestle Waters North America, Bay Area Legal Services, Mobile Physician Services, SafePoint Insurance, donations received during Give Day Tampa Bay and funds raised at the Inaugural Meals On Wheels of Tampa 5K & Fun Run presented by the High School Leadership Board earlier this year.
