ST. PETERSBURG, FL – ARTicles Art Gallery and the Staybridge Suites proudly present an exhibition of botanically-inspired paintings by St. Petersburg artists Elizabeth Barenis, Nathan Beard and Linda Dee Guy. Taking their cue from the prodigious plant-life in our region and ranging in style from geometric semi-abstraction to impressionism, their work strikes a curious balance between representation and abstraction. The exhibition will be on viewMay 24 – August 19, 2018.
About
Elizabeth Barenis creates paintings which are grounded in the reality of her photography, yet abstracted with generalized forms and clean, precise lines – a technique she calls “Abstract Precisionism.” Because the shapes are open to interpretation, what the viewer finds in the painting can reveal meaning that is personal to him or her. In a way, the viewer becomes the subject of the art. Originally from Mississippi, Elizabeth graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 2004 and has been working and exhibiting her art in St. Petersburg since 2015. She was a recipient of the 2017 Emerging Artist Grant by Creative Pinellas, and was recently selected to participate in the upcoming 2018 International Painting Symposium at the Mark Rothko Art Centre in Daugavpils, Latvia.
Nathan Beard works from photographs he takes at local nature parks to create his Pond’s Edge paintings. They serve as personal meditations upon the necessity of stillness and psychological reflection in contemporary life. Often containing depictions of invasive aquatic species, his paintings are also subtle reminders of the enormous impact humans have upon natural systems. Nathan exhibits his work throughout Florida and in Japan, most recently at the Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and the Safety Harbor Museum. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Colorado State University in 2001 and was awarded a Creative Pinellas Emerging Artist Grant in 2017. In addition, Nathan serves as a curatorial assistant and art installer for institutions, businesses and private residences throughout Tampa Bay.
Linda Dee Guy moved to back Florida in 2013 and established residence on Tampa Bay after having taught at Texas Christian University for 36 years. The diverse media she uses reflects her observations from nature, in particular, the littoral area where the sea and shore meet. The images contain contrasting notions of beauty and destruction. Linda was as trained as printmaker at the University of South Florida. She obtained her MFA degree from The Maryland Institute in Baltimore and has exhibited in many national and international exhibitions, particularly in Peru and Japan. In 2017, she received a Creative Pinellas Artist Grant and continues to maintain a practice in her Saint Petersburg, Florida studio.
