SARASOTA, Fla. (April 20, 2018) – The University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee congratulates Spanish Instructor Dr. Jane Govoni on the recent publication of her book, Preparing the Way, Teaching ELs in the Pre-K-12 Classroom (3rd edition).
Dr. Govoni, the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Language) coordinator at USFSM’s School of Education, edited the 294-page instructional book, which is available by publisher Kendall Hunt Publishing Co., he.kendallhunt.com. It will be available by other book sellers in the fall. “It’s a user-friendly book to learn ways to teach and assess ESOL learners,” she said. “The best part of this is that there are just so many activities in the book and it covers state and national ESOL standards.” ESOL training has rapidly expanded over the last 25 years as school districts have sought to transition foreign-born students from separate classroom settings to classes with other English-speaking learners. Doing so helps these students master English, but it also compels districts to equip teachers with the skills to reach their English Learners (ELs) as they shift to regular classrooms. Dr. Govoni’s book does just that. It’s meant for colleges and other institutions to train teachers, administrators and teacher candidates in the techniques and best practices around ESOL instruction. Earlier editions are already in wide use at colleges nationally, and the book is especially popular in Florida, North Carolina and Ohio. In Florida, about 10 percent of public school students speak a foreign language as their first language. The book debuted in 2011. This latest edition provides online chapter tests, classroom apps, resources aligned with ESOL standards and audio-taped teaching scenarios. It features 11 authors who provide a wide range of expertise, along with real-life case scenarios drawn from K-12 classrooms. The book has been paired with the website www.esolinhighered.org to offer additional teaching resources such as videos, audio files and PowerPoint presentations. “Along with the website, this book offers practical insights and expertise from people well known in ESOL training,” Dr. Govoni said. “It comes with updated links and valuable resources to help anyone who needs to learn the methods and techniques for teaching ESOL.” ### |
