About the May 10 film: This compelling 2003 documentary chronicles six decades in the lives of two women known as the founders of the modern lesbian civil rights movement, tracing the emergence of lesbians from the fear of discovery to the expectation of equality. With incisive interviews, rare archival images and warmhearted humor, the film reveals their inspiring public work, as well as their charming private relationship. When they courageously launched the Daughters of Bilitis in 1955, it became the first public organization for lesbians in America. (Not rated)
Save the date, Thursday June 14th, for the next film in the series. While the LGBTQ community began to experience greater visibility in the wake of 1969’s Stonewall riots, generations had quietly lived their lives before, out of the public eye. This 2015 film by documentary filmmaker Stu Maddux reveals this hidden history by unearthing a treasure trove of rare home movies made by gay people – some dating back to the 1930s – that have long languished in the backs of people’s closets. Projecting the viewer back in time, these private moments open a fascinating window into the surprising vibrancy of unheralded LGBT lives. (Not rated)
As part of our LGBTQ Pride Month celebration, our film in June will feature a guest speaker from the Tampa Bay International Gay and International Film Festival (TIGLFF) who will briefly talk about TIGLFF and introduce the film.
Watch for announcements of other films as they are added to the series on the second Thursday of each month.
