SARASOTA, Fla. — The Sarasota County School District’s Volunteer and Partnership Office and TeamUP Volunteer and Partnership Council have named J.E. Charlotte Construction Corp., a Venice-based commercial construction company, the 2017-18 District Outstanding Local Business Partner.
During the April 10 event, with approximately 500 in attendance, J.E. Charlotte Construction was selected as one of the top district winners among 40 other local and corporate businesses nominated for contributions to help meet the needs of students, maximize their learning and enhance the educational environment.
Most recently, J.E. Charlotte Construction took the lead on remodeling Riverview High School’s Athletic Performance Center. The old building, which acted as the wrestling and weightlifting room, has been revamped and now gives more than 500 students access to a state-of-the-art training facility daily.
“I have been around a lot of people that give of their time and resources,” said BJ Ivey, a teacher and the head boys’ basketball coach at Riverview High School who nominated Charlotte. “Jeff is a very genuine, and he is always a joyful giver. It’s a very inspirational thing.”
Through the Riverview Foundation, Charlotte and his wife Virginia have personally helped raised tens of thousands of dollars by securing silent auction items for the Foundation’s annual fundraising gala to enhance educational programs at Riverview High School. The Charlottes have helped create the food closet on campus to help fight student hunger. Each year, the couple also purchases holiday gifts for students in need to ensure that every student has a happy holiday.
“We have been partnering with Sarasota County Schools since 1997 when our first daughter started kindergarten,” said Charlotte, whose three daughters all attended Sarasota County Schools. “In the last five or six years, I’ve been heavily involved with Riverview High School’s athletic department and the Riverview Foundation. Education is important, and I’m proud to partner to support education. It makes me happy that we’ve been able to contribute in a variety of ways for over 20 years, and I’m so honored by this recognition.”
Teachers at each school submit their nominations to the office and then a district winner is selected. The district winners will move on to the state level for consideration.
The Volunteer and Partnership Office support each school’s work with volunteers, business partners and community contributions. The TeamUP Volunteer and Partnership Council, a nonprofit established specifically to connect the community with public schools in Sarasota County, directly supports that work. The collaborative mission is to support educational opportunities for students through comprehensive community involvement by creating public awareness, providing resources, conducting training and supporting and recognizing volunteerism and partnerships.
