(April 02, 2018) – USF Sarasota-Manatee, Cumberland Advisors and the Global Interdependence Center are partnering to host a Financial Literacy Day Thursday, April 5, with panels of financial experts, including Raphael Bostic, president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.
This unique and engaging event is open to the public with topics to appeal to nearly anyone – from students, retirees and average investors to bankers, financial advisors and economists.
Financial Literacy Day is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the USFSM campus, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Registration is $50 and includes lunch. Free Carnival, student showcase set Friday to fete USFSM Students, faculty, staff and the general public are invited to a free carnival Friday, April 6, to celebrate USF Sarasota-Manatee. Admission and the carnival rides are free.
The third-annual “USFSM Carnival” runs from 4 to 9 p.m. in the south parking lot on campus, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Games, food trucks and more will be offered. The carnival culminates a week of events, USFSM Week, to celebrate the campus. Each campus within the USF System is hosting similar weeklong celebrations.
In addition to the carnival, USFSM will hold its annual “USFSM Student Showcase for Projects, Research & Innovation,” in which students display their research and presentation skills.
The showcase, which runs throughout the day, will be open to the public during the carnival. USFSM ‘GloBull’ conference scheduled April 9
The “2018 GloBull Showcase,” a three-day lecture series about global issues, will debut April 9.
Organized by interdisciplinary social sciences student Yolanda Woody, the series resemble “TED Talks” with academics and local experts discussing climate change, hunger, homelessness, discrimination, refugees and migration and other global issues.
The talks will run 20 minutes each with opportunities for questions and comments. The discussions are free and open to the public. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Dr. Jody McBrien, a professor of comparative and international education, is one of the speakers.
“Globalization is increasingly affecting all aspects of our lives, and I am excited to work with students who are engaging in its challenges and opportunities,” said Dr. McBrien, who has focused much of her research on women and children in war-torn areas. “I am so proud of Yolanda’s leadership and of the Global Society’s officers in promoting this and other global events on campus.”
The showcase will conclude April 17 with an event featuring the Salinas Family Aztec Dancers, appearances by local charitable organizations and the Taste of the World food festival.

Chef Darwin Santa Maria, an internationally recognized master of Peruvian-style cooking, is set to bring his award-winning talents to the Bulls Bistro this week.
The owner of Darwin’s Evolutionary Cuisine in Sarasota, Chef Darwin has won numerous awards and cooked for a James Beard dinner. This engaging culinary event is scheduled Thursday, April 5, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The Bulls Bistro is a USF Sarasota-Manatee event that features renowned chefs preparing food in a demonstration kitchen at USFSM’s Culinary Innovation Lab on Main Street in Lakewood Ranch. The events are open to the public. Tickets are $25.

‘Jobapalooza’ career fair a success Dozens of employers mingled with USF Sarasota-Manatee students as the campus debuted its “Jobapalooza” career fair last Thursday.
“This is great. I like that they have all these employers to meet in one place,” said Jenny Serafino, 22, a Professional & Technical Communication student who was hoping to land an internship.
Students engaged in brief interviews, asked questions and moved from table to table at the Selby Auditorium, where the event was held. More employers than initially expected attended. Thirty-three came to the event.
Similar to Bulls in Biz, which is held each fall, Jobapalooza was created to introduce students nearing graduation to internship and career opportunities. Recent graduates were welcome too. About 50 students attended. “It was a great turnout from both students and employers,” Career Services Coordinator Toni Ripo said. “We will be presenting this career-building event next spring as well.” |
