Three students from State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) were named to the 2018 All-Florida Academic Team. Jacqueline Healy-Rinehart, Christina Bobrek and John Thompson were among 141 Florida College System students named to the All-Florida Academic Team.
The students are being recognized by Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society, the Florida College System Foundation, the Florida Lottery, Coca-Cola and RBC Wealth Management for their academic achievement and community service. The students will be recognized during the All-Florida Academic Team Awards Ceremony from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 6 at the Embassy Suites by Hilton Tampa.
Healy-Rinehart, who earned her Associate in Science in criminal justice technology at SCF, is working to earn her bachelor’s degree in Public Safety & Emergency and Management from SCF. Her goal is to work with juveniles or children once she graduates. She also is the vice president of membership for PTK at SCF Venice. While she has been working on her education, she has served as a volunteer working with the elderly in her community, for the Sarasota County supervisor of elections in North Port, at her church and at Reins of Hope, a nonprofit for disabled children.
“I’m interested in working with juveniles through a diversion program,” she said. “I want to do something to help children.”
Bobrek, a State College of Florida Collegiate School (SCFCS) student who will graduate with her Associate in Arts (A.A.) in May, plans to major in biochemistry and minor in nutrition at the University of Florida (UF). Eventually she plans to go to medical school. Bobrek is vice president of service for PTK, president of the Red Cross Club, president of the SCFCS Student Council and a member of the National Honor Society.
Thompson also will graduate from SCFCS and SCF in May and transfer to UF. He plans to major in biology and eventually wants to go to medical school. He said he is interested in studying the brain. He has volunteered at local hospitals and with SCF’s biotechnology labs, assisting with visiting students and is a member of the American Chemical Society. He is vice president of the National Honor Society. a past president of PTK and volunteered with the Key Club at SCFCS. He has received several scholarships, including the H&R Block Financial Literacy Scholarship.
