Sarasota, FL (March 29, 2018) U.S. Green Building Council Florida, a nonprofit organization advancing healthy, high-performing buildings for all, is partnering with three other local nonprofits –Transition Sarasota, City of Sarasota Ready for 100% Clean Renewable Energy for All, and Solutions to Avoid Red Tide — to offer Green Movies That Matter, a new monthly film series that kicks off on Friday, April 27.
Combining U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) statewide film screenings and Transition Sarasota’s Films for a Future, the new series will feature documentaries that spotlight important environmental and social issues, covering topics such as the environmental impact of the typical American diet, plastic ocean pollution, and the expected effects of rising sea levels. Green Movies That Matter provides an excellent monthly venue where area residents can meet and join one of the many local environmental organizations whose members are devoting their energies to make a difference.
The first film, The True Cost, will be shown at 7pm on Friday, April 27, at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 3975 Fruitville Road, Sarasota. The movie explores the environmental impact of the modern clothing industry, as well as its effects on human rights around the globe. Attendees are invited to come to a pre-screening social hour that begins at 6pm, to meet organization members, green corporate sponsors, and enjoy complimentary, healthy refreshments.
After The True Cost, Green Movies That Matter will be shown at the Unitarian Universalist Church at 7pm on the fourth Friday of every month through October. Visit www.USGBCFlorida.org/Calendarto purchase your tickets ($10) and see the complete list of upcoming films. Green Movies That Matter will also feature two noon to 3pm screenings at Mote Marine, May 8: Troubled Waters and Facing the Surge (double feature) and September 13: A Plastic Ocean.
Of the four Green Movies That Matter supporting organizations, Transition Sarasota and Solutions to Avoid Red Tide are also participating in the Community Foundation of Sarasota County’s upcoming 2018 Giving Challenge. During a 24-hour period that runs from noon on Tuesday, May 1, to noon on Wednesday, May 2, donations to more than 600 local nonprofits that have their profiles available now at http://thegivingpartner.guidestar.org will be part of the Challenge. The 2018 Giving Challenge is presented by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County with giving strengthened by the Patterson Foundation. Transition Sarasota looks forward to continuing important programs like its Suncoast Gleaning Project, which has delivered more than 248,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce into the hands of our community’s hungriest families since the program launched in 2010. Solutions to Avoid Red Tide (START) continues to clean coastal waters and fight red tide by seeding thousands of new clams in the Bay and adding to its already collected 20 tons of restaurant shells to be turned into new oyster reefs, because just one oyster filters from 9 to 50 gallons of water daily.
