SARASOTA, Fla. (March 14, 2018) – USF Sarasota-Manatee congratulates longtime supporter Dr. Mona Jain after the Manatee County Board of Education voted Tuesday to name a new middle school after her.
The Dr. Mona Jain Middle School will open in fall 2019. “We are more than proud of Dr. Jain for receiving this wonderful and enduring honor,” USFSM Regional Chancellor Dr. Karen Holbrook said. “Not only has Dr. Jain been a stalwart and longtime supporter of USFSM and her alma mater, USF, but also of the larger community here in Manatee County, especially the public school system. Dr. Jain is a true friend to Manatee County school children and it is fitting to see her legacy honored in this way.” Dr. Mohinder “Mona” Jain is a physician and medical consultant and has served on numerous committees helping children. She taught at Bayshore Middle and High Schools and served as director of family health services for Manatee County’s Head Start program. An immigrant of India, Dr. Jain has served as both a teacher and administrator for American, British and Indian educational systems since 1961. She served on the Florida Governor’s Commission on Education, the executive board of the Florida Commission on the Status of Women and was president of the American Association of University Women. She is a Fulbright scholar and winner of USF’s Distinguished Alumna Award and USFSM’s Distinguished Professional Achievement Award. Dr. Jain earned a PhD in Interdisciplinary Education and Educational Leadership from USF in 1984 and earlier received an M.D. from Spartan Health Sciences University School of Medicine and an ED.S. in Administration and Supervision from NOVA University. She holds additional degrees as well, including an M.S. in Science Education from Florida State University, an B.Ed. in Biological and Health Sciences from Delhi University and a B.Sc. in Biology, Chemistry and History of Sciences from Delhi University. Dr. Jain and her husband, Kailash Jain, were early supporters of USFSM and close friends with Dr. Robert Barylski, the first dean and chief executive officer of USF Sarasota. Additionally, the couple are the parents of Dr. Anila Jain, another longtime USFSM supporter who currently serves on the Campus Board. The Jain family has lived in Manatee County for more than 50 years. The new middle school will be located on 44th Avenue East in Lakewood Ranch, next to the B.D. Gullett Elementary School.
