Who: The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay is working with a network of local, non-profit organizations to expand access to the Florida Veterans Support Line throughout the state of Florida.
Why this is important: Florida has the third largest veteran population in the nation with over 1.5 million veterans living in the state. Through a simple phone call to 1-844-MyFLVet (693-5838), Florida Veterans who are struggling with issues like PTSD, substance abuse, relationship troubles, and personal finances can connect confidentially to emotional support and community resources 24 hours a day.
TAMPA, Fla., March 6, 2018 – The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay announced today that the Florida Veterans Support Line has expanded statewide and is now being answered by a network of local, non-profit organizations throughout the state.
The Florida Veterans Support Line launched as a pilot program operated by the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay. Since 2014, the line has operated in Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Manatee Counties. Through an agreement and funding provided by the Florida Department of Veterans’ Affairs, the line has expanded to every county in Florida.
Calls are being answered by organizations that also answer calls for the 2-1-1 system in Florida. When a veteran calls 1-844-MyFLVet, they will speak with someone who is trained to provide immediate emotional support . The veteran can also be referred to both VA and non-VA resources including private, non-profit organizations, community programs, and local government services. The Dunn&Co. advertising agency has developed a campaign to raise awareness through the state about the Florida Veterans Support Line. The agency is using the targeting ability of social media to reach Florida veterans. They are also creating a unique billboard comprised of military gear donated by veterans, and will be producing a video that features some of the veterans’ stories.
