Brandon, FL, March 5, 2018– Brandon Regional Hospital (BRH) recently received accreditation from the American College of Graduate for two new residency programs approved to add graduate medical education (GME) programs for two new medical specialties: Obstetrics and Gynecology (OBGYN) and General Surgery. Starting July 1, 2018, the hospital will welcome five OBGYN residents and 12 General Surgery residents to begin training at the hospital. The hospital leadership hopes these additional residency slots will help fill the increasing need for these physician specialties locally.
One of only nine OBGYN residency programs in Florida, BRH’s program will offer 20 resident positions once full. The General Surgery residency program will join 14 existing programs in Florida and will ultimately offer space for 24 General Surgery residents.
Nearly one-third of the country’s physicians are over 65 and nearing retirement. At the same time aging baby-boomers continue to need increasing medical care. That convergence of circumstances means there is a physician-shortage crisis looming. To address the shortage, new medical schools are opening, and existing schools are expanding. However, to be licensed, physicians must also complete a residency program and in Florida, there are far more applicants than spots available.
“These additional residency programs mean that more graduating physicians can receive the final training they need to become licensed and start filling this tremendous need in our communities,” explains says Joseph Corcoran, Chief Medical Officer at Brandon Regional Hospital, “It’s a huge accomplishment, but it’s only part of the solution.”
Since it began offering GME in 2015, BRH has attracted 4,579 applicants to its programs. The addition of these specialties, once full, brings the hospital’s GME offerings to 107 residency slots across four accredited programs as follows, Internal Medicine (60 residents), Transitional Year (13 residents), General Surgery (24 residents) and OBGYN (20 residents).
