ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (March 2, 2018) – Local retirement community The Fountains at Boca Ciega Bay is taking advantage of its waterfront real estate with its latest renovation. The community, which is located on Boca Ciega Bay in St. Petersburg, is investing $90,000 in a waterfront renovation that will provide residents with a place to socialize, exercise, relax and enjoy the views of the bay.
Once completed, the new waterfront space will include retractable awnings, lounge furniture and outdoor dining and will provide a space for social events and the community’s Watermark University classes.
“We’re excited to revamp our outdoor space and create an inviting space where residents can enjoy the beautiful views just steps from their doors,” said Suzanne Burtzlaff, Executive Director of The Fountains at Boca Ciega Bay. “Spending time on the water has been found to have a positive effect on mood and overall well-being, and this renovation supports our vision of creating a community where residents thrive.”
Over the last five years, researchers have studied the effects of “blue space,” or aquatic environments, on the human brain. What they found is that exposure to blue space such as rivers, lakes and oceans has a positive impact on mental health, particularlty in terms of stress reduction and perceived well-being. It also promotes physical activity.
“We’ve looked at this research and from what we see, it is a fact,” said Burtzlaff. “Our residents list our waterfront location as a draw for choosing The Fountains and the space is very well used. The water is a reason we all live in Florida and to be able to enjoy the calming, serene and even inspiring view without leaving home is a big plus.”
The waterfront project is part of a nearly $300,000 renovation currently underway at The Fountains. Additional updates include the main dining room, memory care dining room and living room and parking lot. Renovations are expected to be completed by July.
