TAMPA, Fla. — The Straz Center for the Performing Arts presents Dance Theatre of Harlem Power on Pointe on Saturday, March 3, at 8:00 p.m. in Morsani Hall. A singular, thrilling tour de force on the American dance scene since 1969, Dance Theatre of Harlem exploded traditional notions of classical ballet. Now an international sensation performing for sold-out houses, DTH’s company continues to redefine ballet mixing in elements of multicultural storytelling, contemporary flair and an always electrifying use of music with their pristine technical skill. Sleek, strong, daring and divine, DTH is American dance par excellence.

Inspired to bring new opportunity to the lives of the young people in the Harlem neighborhood in which he grew up, Arthur Mitchell and the late Karel Shook founded the Dance Theatre of Harlem in the basement of a church in 1969. Mitchell, who had found success as a principal dancer with the renowned New York City Ballet, understood the power of training in a classical art form to bring discipline and focus to a challenged community.

Dance Theatre of Harlem’s hope is to use the art form of classical ballet to change people’s lives. The organization’s unprecedented success, as a racially diverse company, school and source of arts education was built on creating innovative and bold new forms of artistic expression. Through these varied artistic interactions, DTH’s ambassadors have helped to build character and have provided valuable life skills to countless people in New York City, across the country and around the world.

Regularly priced tickets for the Saturday, March 3, at 8:00 p.m. performance of Power on Pointe are $25-$65 and may be purchased by calling 813.229.STAR (7827) or 800.955.1045 outside Tampa Bay, in person at the Straz Center Ticket Sales Office or online at www.strazcenter.org.
