“This is such a great day for our students and for other families in the community,” says Mazi Goldenberg, Hillel Academy Hebrew and Judaics teacher and overseer of this fun-filled day. “The older students from Middle School set up the stations and then help to run the activities and serve as mentors for the younger students. It’s a great day of laughter, friendship, food and festivities. We look forward to it every year.”
The jolly festival of Purim commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from their prime minister’s plot to annihilate all Jews in a single day. Queen Esther, the wife of King Achashverosh, foiled his plot by inviting the King and Haman to a banquet, at which she revealed her Jewish heritage. She told the king that Haman was planning to exterminate her people, including her and her cousin Mordecai. The Jewish people were saved and Mordecai assumed the position of second in rank to Achashverosh.
