(Sarasota-Manatee) Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Ringling College (formerly Ringling College Lifelong Learning Academy) announces its spring 2018 Einstein’s Circle, “Can a Cake Shop Refuse to Make a Cake for a Same Sex Wedding?” This interactive forum is Wednesday, March 14, 3-4:30 p.m., in the Social Hall at Temple Beth Sholom, 1050 S. Tuttle Ave., Sarasota. The event, sponsored by The Friends of Paul Rosen, is free to the public. Registration is recommended and can be done online at www.rclla.org or by calling 941-309-5111.
Five years ago, a same-sex couple entered a bakery and asked for a cake for their upcoming wedding. Based on his Christian beliefs, the baker refused the request. The case wound up at the Supreme Court where it was deliberated, and a ruling is expected this summer. Participants in this forum will have the opportunity to listen to the arguments of experts, consider the merits of our justice system and discover why the decision before the Supreme Court is not as easy as one might think.
Robert A. Levy, an attorney and chairman of the Cato Institute, and director of the Institute for Justice, the Foundation for Government Accountability and the Forum Club of Southwest Florida, will present in support of the baker’s rights. William H. Goodman, a civil rights attorney and former director of the Center for Constitutional Rights, will represent the rights of the same-sex couple. Barry Waldman, an attorney with practice in personal injury, labor law and alternative dispute resolution, will moderate.
This forum is presented in honor of Paul Rosen, a former attorney, civil rights exponent, a beloved instructor at OLLI, and frequent moderator of Einstein’s Circle forums on constitutional issues. According to Bev Harms, producer of Einstein’s Circles, he would have loved challenging his audience with questions pertinent to the case.
“Paul was an expert in constitutional law, a staunch defender of the underprivileged and the right to due process,” says Harms. “We honor and pay tribute to him with this forum.”
Einstein Circles are moderated by knowledgeable experts on a variety of timely topics and provide an opportunity for participants to engage in a thoughtful exchange of ideas, opinions and information. “If it’s relevant, timely and interesting there’s a good chance we’ll be talking about it at Einstein’s Circle,” says Harms.
