Hillsborough Community College (HCC) Men’s Basketball alumnus, Othello Hunter, is the first HCC player in the history of the college to enter the Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) Basketball Hall of Fame. Hunter played for HCC Men’s Basketball from 2004-2006 and was named the 2005-2006 HCC male student-athlete of the year and an NJCAA All American team member.
In 2006, Hunter was named to the FCSAA/NJCAA all-tournament team, all-state team and was a first team all-conference selection. He is still HCC’s all-time leader in rebounding and blocked shots.
After graduating from HCC, Othello Hunter played for The Ohio State University. In his first year, he led the Buckeyes to a national championship appearance and to an NIT Championship the following year. Othello went on to play professionally for the Atlanta Hawks before leaving to play overseas in Europe.
“Othello continues to give his time, talents and donations to Hillsborough Community College,” said HCC Athletic Director and Men’s Basketball Coach Derrick Worrels. “Othello comes back every year, splitting time between his home in Winston-Salem and here in Tampa, working with our student-athletes. He has been one of the most respected young men in the history of our program, both on and off the court.”
Hillsborough Community College serves more than 44,000 students annually at five campuses and three centers throughout Hillsborough County. HCC is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
