SARASOTA, Fla. (Feb. 02, 2018) – Students with a love of travel and penchant for foreign languages can check out a free talk Feb. 15 by U.S. State Department representative Monique Quesada called the Insider’s Guide to Federal Government Service.
Quesada, the diplomat in residence for South Florida and Puerto Rico, will talk with students and answer questions about job and internship opportunities within the U.S. Foreign Service, the agency responsible for carrying out U.S. policy in foreign countries and assisting travelers. Based at Florida International University in Miami, Quesada frequently travels the state and Puerto Rico to raise awareness about Foreign Service careers. Foreign Service workers are known to work in embassies and consulates worldwide, often helping U.S. travelers, but also playing a role advancing America’s interests abroad, standing up for women’s rights, explaining American foreign policy and protecting embassies from security threats. “Whether constructing or managing embassies throughout the world, explaining American foreign policy to citizens of other countries, or teaching entrepreneurial skills to young people in emerging countries, you can make a difference within the U.S. Department of State,” she said. The Foreign Service offers a range of internship, job and fellowship opportunities. Quesada’s talk is scheduled 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, Feb. 15, at room B-206 at USF Sarasota-Manatee, 8350 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Applicants must be American and it helps to be bilingual, but fluency in a foreign language is not a prerequisite to joining the Foreign Service. Students from USFSM, New College, State College of Florida and the Ringling College of Art and Design are invited to this career information session. For more, visit www.careers.state.gov.
