Tampa, FL, February 2, 2018– Competitive eaters from Tampa Bay and across Florida are invited to enter to qualify for the 2018 El Jefe Burrito Eating Championship to earn the title and a hefty cash prize! The competition awards the fastest contestants who can scarf down a 2.5 lbs El Jefe Burrito from Taco Bus. The grand prize offers up a limited edition, WWE-style Championship belt, a $2,500 cash prize, and bragging rights for the year!
Selected finalists will be eating 2.5 lbs El Jefe at the 2018 El Jefe Burrito Eating Championship taking place on Thursday, April 5th, 2017 at Taco Bus location TBD. Taco Bus invites the public to witness history go down in its second annual celebration of the beloved burrito.
The second prize winner will get a $1,000 cash prize; third place will get $500. Cool Taco Bus swag and other goodies, such as shirts, cups, keychains, and other freebies may be given at the event as well.
From February 1st to March 31st, participants can enter to qualify for the competition by visiting any Taco Bus location and purchasing an El Jefe burrito. If a participant can successfully eat it in less than 6 minutes, they can obtain an El Jefe qualifier certificate from a Taco Bus employee. Using the code on the form, entrants can enter at http://taco-bus.com/el-jefe/ for a chance to be selected as a finalist.
The selected finalists will be notified on April 2nd via email, and those selected will advance to the main event on Thursday, April 5th for the final battle.
El Jefe is one of Taco Bus’ most prized menu items. Weighing in at nearly 2.5 lbs, El Jefe is a beloved favorite of burrito aficionados around the world. The burrito is made with two tortillas, double rice and beans, choice of protein, cheese, sour cream and guacamole!

Now in its second year, the El Jefe Burrito Eating championship is hosted annually by Taco Bus, an institution in the local Tampa Bay Mexican food scene. The El Jefe Burrito Eating Championship was created to celebrate one, unifying principle – to bring people together in the community and appreciate the burrito as a favorite food staple and symbol of Mexican street food! The current record is held by Michael Jenkins, who ate the 2.5 lbs burrito in 2:22 in 2017.
