“Unity is a topic that deserves our attention, now more than ever,” says incoming Editor-in-Chief Susan Burns. “As we begin this year, coming together to celebrate equality, diversity and inclusion is vitally important for all of us.”

• Nonprofit: Tom Waters, President and CEO, Easter Seals Southwest Florida
• Arts: Embracing our Differences
• Education: Vickie Oldham, Newtown Alive
• Public/Private Partnership: Sarasota Community Homeless Partnership, facilitated by Jon Thaxton of Gulf Coast Community Foundation and in partnership with city and county officials
• Business: Manasota Black Chamber of Commerce
• Hurricane Heroes: Dr. Mrydalis Diaz-Ramirez, Ana Maria Suarez and Myreli Zamora, SRQ Florida Helps Puerto Rico
• Alumni: 12th Judicial Chief Circuit Court Judge Charles Williams and Charlie Ann Syprett, Sarasota County Bar Association Diversity Committee
The annual awards are the most inclusive celebration of diversity in Sarasota-Manatee. Unity Award winners will be featured in the February 2018 issue of Sarasota Magazine. A portion of the event proceeds will be donated to The Library Foundation of Sarasota County to purchase much-needed digital resources and books related to diversity for adults, teens and children.
