Thanksgiving will come a few days early for some of St. Petersburg’s most needy citizens

November 19, 2017 by Post

Where:             Daystar Life Center
226 6th Street South
St. Petersburg, FL 33701

When:              Saturday, November 18
9 am – 3 pm

What:              Distribution of Holiday Food bags

Who:               Volunteers from all over the community helping feed the hungry

Volunteers will distribute bags of holiday food to Daystar Life clients on Saturday, November 18 from 9:00 until 3:00 when a festive atmosphere reigns inside and outside the building as individuals, couples, teens and seniors help fill the bags with all the fixings for a bountiful Thanksgiving Day celebration.

The volunteers will also then assist clients with getting the bags to a car, a bus stop or even a bicycle.  Our helpers for the day serve snacks to clients, prepare a lunch for the volunteers, and assemble the Daystar Holiday Mailing for 4000 people.  When all that is done, volunteers return the center to order so that we are ready for clients first thing Monday morning.

Daystar has provided basic necessities on an emergency basis for Pinellas County residents since 1982. Key initiatives include direct, immediate assistance with basic necessities such as food and personal hygiene items.  Daystar also offers support services such as secure mail, access to computers for applying online for benefits, income tax assistance and referrals to necessary services.. We advocate on behalf of individuals and help them to advocate for themselves. Our active advocacy for system change includes food security, access to healthcare, identification, transportation, and housing.

Last fiscal year, Daystar distributed 23,789 bags of groceries to clients. Client visits totaled 17,278 impacting 35,113 people.
