SARASOTA, Fla.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sarasota native, Lara King, a Senior at Florida Virtual School (FLVS) and a varsity coxswain at Sarasota Crew, today signed a National Letter of Intent (NLI) to continue her academic and rowing career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“I am very honored to commit to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and its Women’s Rowing Program to leverage my skills and compete in NCAA Division I. UNC at Chapel Hill combines top-notch academics, incredible support for Olympic sports, and an athletic leadership program. These opportunities coupled with a first-rate rowing program that is aimed at building a legacy, brought me to realize that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is exactly where I want to be to take my education and skills to the next level. I have worked hard to get to this moment and am so excited, honored, and grateful for the opportunity to wear Carolina Blue! Go Heels!,” said Lara King.

Lara King will be graduating from FLVS (Headquartered in Orlando, Florida) in May, is ranked in the top 3% of her class, is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, NSHSS, and Mensa. She has performed volunteer work for ForwardHeroes, with the goal to assist military veterans transition to meaningful civilian careers. “I would like to thank the staff and faculty at FLVS, and my counselor, Amanda Martin, in particular,” she added.

She began her athletic career in 2011 and quickly moved up that year to competing in high school varsity as an 11-year-old coxswain to win the Florida State Rowing Association State Championship in the Women’s Freshman 4+. She decided to move to Sarasota Crew, where she further honed her skills on a highly competitive team nationally and flourished under the direction of Women’s Coach Kirbie Gallie and Head Coach Casey Galvanek. She and the many teammates on boats she has coxed have represented Sarasota Crew and the community well, winning medals in numerous local, state, and regional competitions and championships, adding her plaudits to the many titles amassed by Sarasota Crew over the past six years.

“Being an athlete at Sarasota Crew and growing up in this amazing community that is so supportive of rowing truly propelled me in this sport. I would like to thank my coaches, my teammates, and my parents for their support, guidance, and encouragement to reach this moment. I look forward to their continued support when I move to NCAA competition,” concluded Lara King.

Lara King was accompanied at her NLI signing by her parents Maria (Marisa) Asturias Meyer and Marc Asturias.
