After more than 40 years in the business, veteran Tampa Bay sportscaster Tom Korun is ready to retire. Korun plans to continue his work as Sports Director for ABC Action News-WFTS/TV until December.
Korun is an award-winning sports journalist, including multiple honors by the Florida Sportscasters Association and the Sunshine State Awards. His career started in Iowa and brought him to the Bay area in 1986. Korun, known for the catchphrase he uses going in commercial breaks as being back in “a minute and change,” has made a name for himself by working in local television, local radio and statewide on the Buccaneers Radio Network.
“Hard to believe it’s been over 42 years since my first TV sportscast at WHO-TV in Des Moines. A 19-year-old student at Drake University cutting my teeth in one of the most exhilarating industries on earth,” said Korun. “Now I want to thank everyone who’s joined me during the week and weekends at 6 and 11 for the past 31 1/2 years here in the Tampa Bay area.”
“Tom has set a high standard for local sports coverage,” said WFTS news director Matt Brown. “Not only has he provided great reporting, but Tom has added insight and commentary to sports stories you don’t get anywhere else.”
“I’ve been given tremendous latitude to express my opinions and I will be forever grateful. I especially enjoyed the passion of viewers who stepped forward to express their thoughts because they mattered to me and still do,” commented Korun.
Korun will make his last appearance on December 15, 2017. He and his wife, Gil, will continue to call Tampa home. You can follow Tom on his Facebook page (www.facebook.com/TomKorunWFTS) as he shares stories and fun memories of his career.
