New Date Announced for The FHM’s Exhibition Opening Reception and Performance with Keep St Pete Lit and the Second Saturday ArtWalk!

October 9, 2017 by Post

Rescheduled event will take place on Saturday, October 14, 2017
October 9, 2017 [St. Petersburg, FL] — The Florida Holocaust Museum (The FHM) is pleased to present the exhibition The Holocaust and the Book of Fire by Murray Zimiles. The exhibition opening reception, which was postponed due to Hurricane Irma, has been rescheduled and will take place on Saturday, October 14th at 5:30 p.m. In conjunction with Keep St Pete Lit and the Second Saturday ArtWalk, nine writers will perform their short stories, poems, and imaginings inspired by this exhibition.
The writers and performers include:
Cindy Stovall
Frank Wells, read by Becca McCoy
Sheila Cowley, read by Fanni Green with dancer Paula Kramer
Bob Devin Jones
Sandra Gadsden
Bob Schwartz
Peter Meinke
Maureen McDole
Lisa Spencer
The paintings, drawings, prints, and artist’s books by Murray Zimiles are graphic statements meant to engage and propel the viewer into a whirlwind of fire and devastation. In these powerful works, Zimiles deals with the perceived absence of God and the absence of civilization during the Holocaust.
About his work, Murray Zimiles says, “At first I had depicted the destruction of a people, then I found I could allude to the genocide by showing the burning of the beautiful wooden synagogues of Eastern Europe. To an artist the systematic destruction of buildings, art works, and artifacts is a particularly painful aspect of the destruction of a people.”
The exhibition opening reception and performance is free and open to the public. Complimentary beer, wine, and snacks will be served. To reserve your seat, please call 727.820.0100, extension 301.
The Holocaust and the Book of Fire by Murray Zimiles is on display through Sunday, December 31, 2017 at The Florida Holocaust Museum. The Florida Holocaust Museum is located at 55 5th Street S, St. Petersburg, FL 33701.
