Acme Sponge and Chamois Sells Chamois Company to Midwest Manufacturer
Tarpon Springs’ Acme Sponge and Chamois Co., has sold its Chamois business to a Kansas manufacturer. Acme Sponge, founded in 1938 by the late Michael Cantonis and headquartered in Tarpon Springs, will continue its sponge business here. Hopkins Manufacturing will add an operations and distribution facility in Tarpon Springs and keep the current 15 employees.
City Adopts FY18 Budget
The City’s fiscal year 2018 budget begins on Oct. 1. Thanks to an 8% increase in property revenues, the $56 million balanced budget maintains a tax rate of 5.42, provides for infrastructure projects, public safety personnel, sewer and water improvements, exterior renovation of the Cultural Center, and more. New Restaurants, Retail Coming to Former Office Depot Site
Get ready for Burger King, Tijuana Flats, Firehouse Subs, Sports Clips, and more as the former Office Depot on US 19 undergoes redevelopment into a retail center. The project is under construction with an anticipated completion in early 2018. The photo above shows the demolition of the rear of the building underway.

Local Gardens by Margo Plant & Boutique is now open along the Pinellas Trail at 221 N. Safford Ave. The store features plants and unique gift items including jewelry, candles, accessories, and handmade items from local artisans. The owner is also opening two outdoor markets this fall: The Pinellas Trail Market on the 2nd and last Saturday of the month, 9 am-1 pm, beginning Oct. 28, and Edible Eden Sunday Organic Marketplace, Sundays from 11 am-2 pm beginning Oct. 15.
Jersey Mikes to Open Soon on US 19
Jersey Mike’s will be opening in mid-October in the Publix shopping center outlot just north of Arby’s. Jersey Mike’s Subs began in 1956 in Point Pleasant, New Jersey, and has 1,500 stores nationwide.
