Hudson, Florida (September 27, 2017) – Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point recently was received a special recognition from the Pasco Economic Development Council at its 31stAnnual Awards Dinner and Trade Show. RMCBP was recognized for its professional handling of the disaster that occurred at the hospital in August 2016.
At that time lightning struck the generators on the hospital roof, catching fire and causing all power on the campus to be lost. The fire, which started in the generator room, was extinguished within the first 10 minutes of the crews being on scene, but emergency and back-up power had to be cut to the buildings. Fifteen percent of power had been restored to the hospital, but evacuations continued for some time. Ambulances came from throughout central Florida and almost 300 patients were evacuated. Intensive care patients and critical patients were prioritized for evacuation and there were no reports of additional injuries or crews during the incident.
In presenting the award Pasco EDC president Bill Cronin said, “They were able to overcome the situation and safely evacuate over 1,000 patients, visitors, and personnel in under seven hours without injuries.”
In accepting the award Regional Medical Center’s CEO Shayne George referred to an ancient oriental saying: “We know the sound of two hands clapping, but what is the sound of one hand clapping?” The saying refers to the futility of one hand flapping aimlessly in the wind trying to make a sound without the other one to join it, nothing happens. “Nowhere was that saying more relevant than what happened to us exactly one year ago,” said Shayne George. “The success of that evacuation was the result of many hands clapping.”
