University Area CDC Designated a Bicycle Friendly Business and Will Offer Bike-Friendly Activities

September 20, 2017 by Post

Tampa, Fla. – University Area Community Development Corporation (University Area CDC) has been designated a Gold level Bicycle Friendly Business by the League of American Bicyclists, due to its strong commitment to promoting bicycling in the neighborhood. Additionally, University Area CDC has announced it will offer expanded activities to encourage cycling.

At University Area CDC, pedestrian and bicycle advocacy are top priorities, as are promoting general fitness and health for area residents, says CEO Sarah Combs.

“For most University Area residents, bicycles are their main mode of transportation. We are deeply committed to safe bike riding, as well as walking, in our neighborhoods. We are honored by this Gold level award, which encourages us to continue, and even to expand, our efforts,” Combs says.

A few reasons University Area CDC received the Bicycle Friendly Business award are that the organization provides bicycle training workshops, bicycle fix-it stations, ample bike parking and group rides for employees and the public. Staff is encouraged to ride bicycles to and from work as well; showers and lockers are provided for residents and employees.

Other companies designated as Bike Friendly Businesses are invited to attend the fourth-quarter Partners Coalition Meeting to discuss ways to encourage bicycling. The meeting, held on Thursday, Oct. 26 from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the University Area CDC at 14013 N. 22nd St., Tampa 33613, is open to the public and will feature other organizations working to improve the community. Complimentary breakfast will be served and networking is encouraged.

Plans are underway to present even more events and activities for area residents to encourage safe bicycle riding. More information about the League of American Bicyclists’s business program is available at www.bikeleague.org/business.

University Area CDC offers support for thousands of Tampa residents through youth programs, adult education and resource assistance. Its primary mission is the redevelopment and sustainability of the at-risk areas surrounding University of South Florida’s Tampa campus.
