Goodwill and Red Cross Partnering to Provide Needed Items to Hurricane Irma Victims

September 20, 2017 by Post

In response to Hurricane Irma and the overwhelming generosity of the American people, the American Red Cross and Goodwill in Florida have established a partnership that will better serve Floridians affected by the hurricane during recovery efforts.
Throughout Florida, the Red Cross is part of a large team of partners that have launched a massive relief response to provide safe shelter, food and comfort to people who have been affected by the storm.
In order to help streamline the anticipated donations of clothing, shoes and household goods, the Red Cross has partnered with Goodwill Industries to accept and manage donated goods. People who would like to donate items can visit any Goodwill store or donation center throughout Florida and designate their donation to Hurricane Irma. Donated items will be sold and the proceeds will support certificates to be redeemed at Goodwill stores. The certificates will be distributed by the Red Cross in support of shelter residents and disaster relief clients impacted by Irma, allowing them to select items they want and need.
“Goodwill is grateful for the generosity of our donors and shoppers. With their support, we can provide necessary items to those affected by the hurricane,” said Bill Oakley, Florida Goodwill Association president. “This partnership shows the strength and magnitude of what collaboration can do.”

Through Goodwill’s services, more than 223,000 people were served in 2016 with a total economic impact of over $1.6 billion across the state. We provide employment, job training, and other community-based programs. At Goodwill, we believe that work creates the economic energy that builds strong families and vibrant communities. Work builds self-confidence, relationships, and independence. Everyone deserves a chance to have those things in life. Goodwill provides that chance.
