Tampa Bay’s World Suicide Prevention Day Event on September 9th

The Tampa Bay Suicide Prevention Task Force and the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay will be presenting a special event in observance of World Suicide Prevention Day on Saturday, September 9, 2017. The theme for 2017 is Take a Minute, Change a Life.

What: World Suicide Prevention Day Event*

When: Saturday, September 9, 2017, 2:00pm – 4:30pm

Where: James A. Haley VA – SCI Dining Room, 13000 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., Tampa, FL 33612

Why:
– There is one death by suicide in the US every 13 minutes. (CDC)
– In 2014, over 42,000 Americans took their own lives. (CDC)
– There is one suicide for every estimated 25 suicide attempts. (CDC)
– After cancer and heart disease, suicide accounts for more years of life lost than any other cause of death. (CDC)

Highlights:

– Interactive displays will provide techniques for coping and building resiliency
– Demonstration of self-care and relaxation techniques
– Performance by Synchrony Dance Company
– Photo opportunities with DC Comic Characters
– Candlelight vigil in remembrance of lives lost to suicide
– Free event for the general public
– Speakers include Grace Terry, MSW (“Amazing Grace”); Jesse Collins, PhD, LMHC, NCC, PA; Emily Surak, Miss Central Florida’s Outstanding Teen; and Al Ruechel, Bay News 9 Senior Anchor

*The official World Suicide Prevention Day is Sunday, September 10th. However, the event for Tampa Bay is being held on Saturday, September 9th.
